Beautification Project Asks us to Run for the Trees
2008

The story behind our upcoming Run for the Trees Run/Walk:

This past spring, several members of the class of 2008 visited with Mr. George N. King Jr., Headmaster, to discuss the ir class’ gift to the school.  They discussed the pristine new fields on the Merle-Smith campus but were concerned about the lack of protection from the wind, exposure to Route 22, in addition to its aes the tic limitations.  They recounted how the elements made the temperature feel much colder than it actually was and adversely affected the athletic contests and performance.  The noise from the battering wind and the abundant traffic on Route 22 made it hard to hear teammates and the ir coaches during practices and games.  However, as a testament to the ir education at Moravian Academy , the students offered a solution:

Plant a variety of trees on the Merle-Smith Campus to (1) minimize the elements incurred during the fall and spring sports seasons; (2) enhance the aes the tic appeal and use of the athletic fields;(3) provide a unique buffer to the intrusion of Route 22 on the ir campus; and (4) advance the Academy’s contribution to the preservation of our environment.

Inspired by the ir vision, Mr. King and the Board of Trustees have agreed to a landscaping project on the fields that will be completed through a three phase schedule.  This enhancement to the athletic fields on the Merle-Smith campus is both necessary and abjectly beneficial.  The plans include:

Tree lined fields to alleviate excessive winds and buffer Route 22; appropriate signage identifying the Academy and visible from Route 22; a pebbled walking/running path, generating a park-like ambiance consistent with the o the r areas of the campus; and an archway, which will serve as the official entrance to the athletic fields.  This area will also include formal recognition of each class making future gifts to the project.

Funds will be raised in many ways to complete this project.  The 5K Run for the Trees Run/Walk is one of several ways we will raise funds to complete this project. Click here to register!
