REACHING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

PREKINDERGARTEN

Pre-kindergarten students learned the importance of fire safety procedures from Mrs. Kehoe, Miss Gilmore and Mrs. Merchant.  They concluded their classroom instruction with a visit to the Broad Street Fire Station where local firemen gave them tour of the facility.

KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten visited Monocacy Creek and Green Pond at the Upper School.  The “catch of the day” provided much
detailed information about creek and pond life and the surrounding areas.

FIRST GRADE

First Grade enjoyed a damp autumn day at the Unangst Tree Farm.  Prior to the pumpkin picking event, they learned about the different types of pumpkins. They also enjoyed a wagon ride, corn maze, corn jump and petting zoo.

SECOND GRADE

Second grade collected various types of leaves in God’s Acre.  They continued
their observations in the classroom by creating some leaf rubbings.

THIRD GRADE

Third Grade visited Peace Valley Nature Center where they learned about Native Americans indigenous to eastern Pennsylvania.  They were shown animal skins and “skin stories” and learned how early peoples used the wigwam and made a fire using a spinner.  Faculty and students traveled to Greenkill Center for an overnight field trip.  They participated in hiking, canoeing, and cooperative groups projects. Students were intrigued by a herpetologist who shared a variety of animals. They returned to the Lower School with a better appreciation for our environment.

FOURTH GRADE

Fourth Grade stayed local for their overnight field trip.  After a visit to the Lehigh Valley Heritage Center where they learned how to write with quill pens, they set up camp at the DaVinci Science Center in Allentown.  Students investigated workshops focused on weather with activities involving tornado and hail making, convection currents and wind patterns. After a good night’s sleep they went spelunking and panning for gemstones at Crystal Cave.

FIFTH GRADE

It was Philadelphia-bound for the fifth graders. They took a historic trip through Philadelphia stopping briefly at Independence Hall.   Students gathered information and experienced “hands-on” activities such as rock climbing at the Franklin Institute followed by a visit to the Mandell Center for the Real Pirates exhibition.
